Mad King Janus

Crashing

our 1st encounter

Just as our heroes get comfortable with standing in line, an explosion rocks the building from the south. Debris is thrown in every direction and many people are knocked on their derrieres. Over a dozen men in mismatched armor flood through the wall, one of whom raises his fist in the air and cries out “For truth and liberty!” The invaders all have a patch on their shoulder with a blue eye, and meet battle with the first guardsmen they each encounter.

Each adventurer must roll for initiative as well as their reflex defense for the blast. None of you are considered battle ready, so if you intend to use your weapon, you’ll need to draw it. I’ll post opposing faction map positions once everyone has posted their initiative and reflex check rolls.

Atoll: Initiative 14
Reflex Defense: 22

Jukka -

Initiative 25
Reflex defense is 21

On my turn I will ready my weapon, but unless there is someone targeting me or what seems to be someone who is not a combatant (ie guards, other adventurous types in the crowd, any one with a weapon drawn that seems to know how to use it), I won’t do anything right away but keep an eye out.

Zealot
Initiative: 14
Reflex: NATURAL 20!!!!!!! (Editted by DM, because you don’t roll for reflex defense)

Zealot draws out his heavy warpick, ready to sink it’s cold steel into enemy skulls

Each adventurer is knocked off their feet. When the air clears and lift up their heads, they find the room filled with battle.

A guard points to Atoll and shouts “If you value your freedom, you’ll assist in fighting back this attack!” Then returns to exchanging blows with a stout dwarf".

Through the hole now adorning the southern wall, a Dragonborn steps through and tries to identify his comrades. When spotting Jukka, he entreats to him “Please! Help us fight against the tyranny!” He dives to the side of a desk as 2 arrows go whizzing through the air where his head just was.

Because none of the adventurers have yet declared themselves a part of the battle, initiative will fall on the first to act, and in the event of a tie will go to whoever has initiative order amongst them. You have a choice to make, whether you will fight for one-side, or the other, or potentially neither, or both I suppose. You identify several individuals among the fight.

Guards: The ranking official (A), who holds a battleaxe. Schiff (B), the big ugly one also wielding a battleaxe. A mage carrying a staff ©, seems to be holding his own. And several archers (D-H) trying to hide behind desks shooting at the oncomers.

Invaders: A human with a mace in one hand (A), and a whip in the other; a human (B) wielding a short sword and a dagger; The Dragonborn © wielding a bastard sword, and a collection of other soldiers (D-H) armed with improvised weaponry.

To avoid giving advantage to those who may not be able to post right away, I’ll say the first opportunity to post a response is tonight at 8 p.m. MT. We’ll see what happens from there.

Zealot searches among the attackers and the guards, using a passive perception of 20, for anything identifying which of any of the figters might be an enemy of Ioun.

alex_kenney alex_kenney 6 days ago
None of the nearby combatants seem to have offended the holy one Ioun.

Prattman Prattman 5 days ago
Atoll stands (move action), draws his weapon (minor action) dashes towards the nearest pair of combatants (standard action used to take a move action).

YeldarbNaed YeldarbNaed 5 days ago
Jukka stands and looks around saying, playing up his accent “A tyranny? I have never heard of such a monster! Why are you all fighting each other when there is a monster coming!?” Turning around, he takes a Jinx Shot at the mage, afterwords swearing in his native tongue, “Sorry! It slipped! I hope you are not hurt, we will need your help to fight monster!”

Minor to load weapon, standard to shoot, move to stand up and look like an idiot.

Bluff check to appear like a buffoon who doesn’t know what is going on and loosed an arrow by mistake (11 + 15 modified) 26

Jinx Shot – 20 (crit) + 17 (37)

Damage 27 (max crit, + 9 for bonus) (plus 2 if mage is not adjacent to anyone)
If the mage misses an attack before the end of my next turn he falls prone.

YeldarbNaed YeldarbNaed 5 days ago
Oh, and note my bluff should be trying to bluff everyone, including Atoll and Zealot.

Mage is hit, and looks rather annoyed.

With this being the first decisive act that may change fighter decision, Initiative order is set as such.
Assa: 33
(B) Min: 29
(B)Glad: 27
(B)Skirm: 26

(P) Jukka: 25
(G)Mage: 22 [Guard C]
(G)Brute: 18 [Schiff, or Guard B]
(G)min: 16 [Guards D-H]
(P)zealot: 14
(P)Atoll:14
(G)Sgt: 9 [Guard A]

Jukka just went, so we are now on the Mages turn!

alex_kenney alex_kenney 5 days ago
The mage shifts away from the ranger next to him, and shouts across the room “Archers! Come to my aid!, I cannot best the rogue before me and watch my own back! Don’t believe his treachery, he’s in league with them!”

After shifting, Mage attacks the closer threat. an Icy serpent spews from his hand and springs to wrap around the invader. However the target leans hard to one side so the frosty mist barely misses him. He looks up at the mage and grins and shouts “For truth!”

Between the surprise shot from behind and his lack of aim, the mage stumbles back on his own robe and lands prone.

alex_kenney alex_kenney 5 days ago
Schiff swings his large axe and takes off the head of what looked like a fat little farmer. “Stay out of my way.” he mutters, then turns to look at who shot his companion. “You there! You are under arrest for assault on a royal guard!” He moves towards the bard, walking to the openning of the roped lane the offender stands in.

alex_kenney alex_kenney 5 days ago
3 archers around the room take fire at the bard, and 2 at nearby thugs.

26, 29, and 34 against Jukka for 8 damage each if they hit.

The 2 shooting at thugs miss.

YeldarbNaed YeldarbNaed 5 days ago
Question: Was the farmer part of the attackers, or just a bystander?

alex_kenney alex_kenney 5 days ago
Sorry, I should have clarified. The farmer was one of the “thug” minions.

YeldarbNaed YeldarbNaed 3 days ago
So, it is Zealot and then Atoll next, right?

Poopsock Poopsock Today
Zealot moves toward Schiff. Halfway there he utters an Oath of Enmity against Schiff, and immediatly afterward uses his Aspect of Speed to reach Schiff and attacks (31 vs AC). 19 damage if hit, 9 if miss, he then shifts back 5 spaces from whence he came.

alex_kenney alex_kenney Today
Schiff is attacked from the side and takes the blow. He turns to look at who attacked him, and sees the warforged too far away to have actually done what he thought just happened.

Prattman Prattman Today
Atoll had been planning to help the guards, fearing for his own safety, but as the lead guard moved to arrest the man who had fired an arrow in an attempt to help the guards, he realized that this might not be the best plan.

“Arresting someone who just made a simply error while trying to help?” Atoll cried over the din of the battlefield. “And you think I will help you?”

He swings his glaive at the guard (using weight of stone at-will 23 vs AC). Lightning flows over the guard (13 damage) as he flies 10 ft (slide 2 squares) next to another guard. He lands on the ground, twitching slightly (knocked prone). It almost feels like the stone beneath him is seeping into his muscles, making him sluggish (slowed). (note while prone and adjacent to me, any attacks against him get my wis modifier (4) as bonus damage against him).

He then bends low, ready to pounce on anyone who tries anything (Guards B and D are marked).

alex_kenney alex_kenney Today
Schiff is tossed about like a rag doll, a rather large rag doll, and falls to one knee.

The Sergeant observes conditions of the room, and tries to struggle against one of the thugs surrounding him. After failing to do anything effective, he slips between two of them a step and shouts to all the room “All citizens stand down! Any who do not throw down arms will be considered enemies of the state!” Then, looking to the archer near the door “Alert the city watch! We are routed and require more troops!”

The young trooper nods, and stows his weapon and makes for the door. The Dragonborn shouts from acrossed the room “Don’t let him escape!” and begins running after him. While passing the shifter, he calls out, "Keep these brutes occupied, me and my men will secure the exit and surrounding exits to ensure your escape! He then throws an empty wine bottle at the shifters feet.

All of the invaders follow the dragonborn, leaving our adventurers to mop up what is left of the royal guard.

Next initiative round, which means Jukka, You’re up.

Comments

Jukka got hit by all three arrows shot at him, two grazing shots and a shallow wound to the arm. (taking him to 52 HP). He tries to move behind any nearby cover from the archers, then readies an arrow.
“The rest are still squabbling though, not so good when there is a monster around.”

He turns to the mage and instead of firing and arrow, he swings his bow back and forth making it whistle. Turning to the mage again, he says “And this one is accusing me of being bad. I would say he doesn’t have a leg to stand on!” With that horrible excuse for a joke, he casts Vicious Mockery on the mage. (15 +13 = 28 vs Will, for 9 damage if he hits, and the mage gets -2 to attack rolls until the end of his next turn.)

Crashing

The mage’s lip starts to quiver. As non-vicious as the mockery may be, it struck a nerve.

He stands up and in frustration fires a bolt of fire at the bard. (hits against your AC of 24, even with debuff to my attack). [deals 6 fire damage, and ongoing 5 fire damage (save ends)]

Frustrated at not doing much in reaction to what has happened to him, the mage starts wringing his hands on his staff while staring down the bard, it appears he’s imagining strangling the man with the funny accent.

Schiff stands from his recent bout with the fuzzy one, lifts his axe and brings it down on him, finding flesh. (attack hits on your 25 AC) [deals 23 dmg and Atoll is slowed until end of Schiffs next turn]

The archers (one of which shifts away one square from Atoll) all draw bow and fire at the shifter. Only 1 finds its target. [8 dmg]

Crashing

From the look of confusion on the guard’s face, Zealot realizes the knave had no idea it was he, the warforged, who struck him. Watching him tear into those around him with his axe stirs something inside the machine.
Summoning the power of Ioun, Zealot rushes to Schiff once more, raises his warpick high above his head and brings it crashing down (22 vs Fort for both Schiff and Guard D-all enemies in close burst 3). A thunderous boom erupts from his weapon and discharges 17 + 5(thunder) to all enemies hit by the strike.
Zealot stares down Schiff with eyes glowing in an electric blue, unafraid to let the dishonorable guard know he means business.

Crashing

Schiff has a hard time withstanding the thunderous strike and a bit of yellow liquid trickles from his leg armor. The Archer on the other hand takes it in good stride and is ready for more.

Crashing

Atoll shifts next to the archer who was trying to escape him, and swings his glaive around himself in a deadly arc (Strongskin Clash). His glaive strikes the archer squarely (26 vs AC, for 12 lightning damage) but bounces harmlessly off of Schiff’s armor (19 vs AC). The archer flies 10 ft (slide 2 squares) and collapses in a twitching heap on the floor (knocked prone) still next to the shifter. Standing nearby, Zealot feels his already hard skin harden further (he gains resist 6 to all damage from Strongskin Clash).

A growl escapes Atoll’s lips as he readies himself for further action (both Schiff and the archer are marked again).

Crashing

The Sergeant rushes to his companions aid and bashes the construct with his shield, knocking Zealot prone.

Crashing

Jukka winces at the flame as they burn him again. “I think you should stop hurting people, sir.”

He shoots at the wizard again with Karmic Wound. (29 vs AC for 21 damage. If he hits anyone before the end of my next turn he will take 12 damage)

Drawing and nocking another arrow, he surveys the battlefield to see how the shifter is going. "Are you well friend? Let me know if their attacks start to tickle. Err… not tickle… what is the word… hurt!

He manages to put out the fire burning him as well (Save 13)

Crashing

Mage delays till after Schiff’s turn. New order is:
(P) Jukka: 25
(G)Brute: 18 [Schiff, or Guard B]
(G)Mage: 22 [Guard C]
(G)min: 16 [Guards D-H]
(P)zealot: 14
(P)Atoll:14
(G)Sgt: 9 [Guard A]

Schiff finds himself flanked by the fuzzy one and a construct, who is on one knee. He shifts a step, to avoid being further flanked, raises his axe high above his head and brings it down hard on the shifter (21 damage, furthermore I ask you, what is the point of doing a 3d10+6 damage if on those 10’s I roll 2’s and 3’s?).

The mage, seeing his opportunity openned before him, reaches into his mind and unleashes a fiery plume upon the infidels. (22 damage to both Zealot and Atoll, yes, 3D6+6 apparently does more than 3D10+6). The pressure exuded from this attack causes blood to start dripping from his nose, and also begins bleeding from his previously felt wounds.

The archers draw arrow and let loose. 2 of the 3 finding their mark in the prone zealots form (16 damage total)

Crashing

Annoyed at the recent strikes against him that have found their mark, Zealot rises from his knee and with angelic alacrity he shifts to flank Schiff once more, whom he has identified as the greatest threat. He swings his warpick once again (30 vs AC) for 19 damage to the malicious guard. In a moment of zealous fervor as he attacks the guard he shouts, “Feel the wrath of Ioun, you bawdy, malodorous, jackanape!”

Crashing

The pursuit of the servant of Ioun starts to catch up with the burly soldier. The most recent strike draws blood that runs freely down his chest.

However, hot on the heels of the Avenger comes the Sergeant again?!? The construct just barely catches him out of the corner of the eye before he feels the shield against his face again!
BAM!
And Zealot is knocked prone again. The sergeant looks down at him with mirth “When I want your attention I’ll HAVE IT!”

Crashing

Blood leaks from Atoll, he lets out a roar, and the hair on his body grows longer (minor action: Longtooth Shifting. Probably could use a hand from Jukka now). He jabs his glaive into Schiff (17 lightning damage. Warden’s Sacrifice, when Atoll takes damage from an attack Zealot will gain 6 temp HP), knocking him back by the sergeant (slides 2 squares, knocked prone). Atoll lopes forward landing beside both sergeant and Schiff. “What if I want your attention?” he growls (both Schiff and sergeant are marked).

Crashing

On Schiff’s attack I yell out a warning an shoot at Schiff. (Arrow of Warning, attack roll 18 + 17 = 35 vs Reflex, Damage 22, and Atoll gets a free at will attack vs him with a +4 to the attack roll, interrupt action). Atoll used it to “30 vs AC for 13 lightening damage, and I get to slide him and knock him prone.” (I had him on messenger.)

On my actual turn, I will speak a Majestic Word to Atoll (15 + healing surge, can shift one square, gain 5 temp hit points), nocks another arrow, and shoots the sergeant, insightfully pointing out some of the gaps in his defenses. “We will have all of attention of the tyrann-monster if you keep yelling!”

(Attack is 27 vs Reflex for 20 damage. All of his defenses are equal to his lowest defense until the next time he is hit, and the next hit on him get +4 damage.)

If someone gets hit in the next initiative pass, he will interrupt with Virtue of Prescience on that person, boosting the defense hit by 6 until their next turn. This may negate the attack from hitting.

Crashing

The bloody enforcer finally had enough. He grips lower on his axe handle and leans away as he starts to spin, cleaving all enemies next to him. CRITICAL STRIKE. (Atoll and Zealot take 26 damage and ongoing 5 damage).

The mage launches a fireball at the warforged. (hits, even w/ virtue of prescience) (Zealot takes an additional 11 damage plus ongoing 5 fire damage).

Archers fire again at Atoll, all 3 finding their target (24 damage total from archers)

Crashing

Bloodied from the battle, Zealot is able to put out the flames (15 save) and stands once more to face the brutes before him. He swings his warpick once more at Schiff (31 vs AC) for 23 damage and teleports next to one of the archers (Guard E). As he reappears next to the archer, Zealot calls upon the aid of the mighty Ioun and is transformed into a silver shadow. Gain 16 hp and concealment which lasts until all 16 hp are gone.

Crashing

As the war pick leaves his body, Schick falls in the direction it was pulled. Dead. The sergeant looks to the offender, and is shocked that he has vanished. He notices him a great distance away and calls out "would you quit running! I’m having a hard time keeping up. " (as reaction he shifts his move speed towards zealot.)

Crashing

The wounds across Atoll begin to mend on their own (regeneration 4). (Failed Font of Life throw). Atoll follows the sergeant. Swinging his glaive low he strikes at his legs (19 vs AC, if it hits 13 lightning damage, he is slowed, and I slide him 2 squares and knock him prone. Whether or not I hit, he is marked)

Crashing

The Sergeant hops over the glaive and (as a minor action) brings his shield down on Atoll’s crown, bringing the shifter to one knee (knocked prone). “For King Janus!” he shouts has he follows that up with bringing his battleax down hard. (deals 19 damage, and Atoll grants combat advantage until it hits the Sergeant with an attack (or save ends). Then shifts one space away.

Crashing

Jukka speaks another Majestic Word to Atoll (19 + healing surge). Then he starts singing a tale of revenge, ending with shooting the sergeant, (Saga of Vengeance 27 v AC, 28 damage, half on a miss. Either way, every time an ally hits the sergeant they can either roll a saving throw or gain 5 HP)

Crashing

The Sergeant takes the hit, Doesn’t like the look the others in the room are giving him.

The Mage looks at the bard who ambushed him near the beginning of all this. “Your puny rebellion is no match for the power of this empire!” he yells as he tosses another fireball. The magical energy glances off the shoulder of the bard, but fails to hit its mark. In frustration, he calls for the archers to assist.

The archers draw and release aiming for Jukka, all 3 fairing better than the mages last attack (24 damage total).

Crashing

Zealot calls down an oath of enmity upon the guard in front of him as he brings down his war pick (30 vs AC) for 14 damage.

Crashing

The archer looks down and see’s a familiar looking arm. This is the last thought that travels through his mind before laying down to rest beside that arm, permanently.

Crashing

Atoll can’t seem able to put out the fire (failed font of life), but swing’s his glaive at the sergeant (35 vs AC. If it hits he takes 11 damage, I shift him 2 squares, he is knocked prone, and slowed). Atoll also marks the sergeant.

Crashing

The blade catches the officer in the chest, and as the static electricity drags his body, blood sprays from the wound, coating Atoll in a thin layer of red mist.

Screaming, he stands and tries to backhands his attacker with his shield but finding only air. He then catches his balance and brings down his axe again finding meat this time. (20 damage and Atoll grants combat advantage until he hits the sergeant with an attack (save ends).)

Crashing

Jukka cries in pain from the various arrows that have hit him, and Is quiet for once. He simply shoots one of the archers with a Jink Shot (32 vs AC, 16 damage)

Crashing

In the throws of death, the archer simply cries out “I was just about to pay off the house!”

The mage, seeing the shifter and homonculus taking damage over time turns his attention to the human, throwing a ball of flame and setting him on fire. (4 fire damage and ongoing 5 fire damage (save ends)).

The remaining archer fires a shot at the Warforged. (8 damage)

Crashing

Zealot looks at the two beings engulfed in flames and his eyes fix on the mage hurling the fire. Using his Aspect of Agility, Zealot rushes to the mage and brings his warpick crashing down (16 vs AC) for 17 damage, shifting back a square and pulling the mage with him.

Crashing

The noble effort by Zealot is in vain, he does not hit, and he does not shift nor pull magey poo.

Crashing

Atoll puts out the fire that has been burning him (finally passed Font of Life) and strikes at the sergeant again (27 vs AC, 15 lightning damage if it hits, shift him 2 squares, slows him, knocks him prone).

Crashing

The trading of blows continues. The officer stands, swings at Atoll with his axe but hitting only air. He then follows it up with backhanding his target with his shield, catching the shifter in the jaw and knocking him prone.

Crashing

Jukka cringes at the flames as they burn him. He crouches for a moment to catch his breath (second wind, +19 HP and +2 to all my defense until start of my turn). Then he pushes himself to give a little more (action point)

He then pops out and makes a Prophesied Strike at the wizard with his bow (36 vs AC for 18 damage, and the next person to try and hit the wizard gets to roll 2d20 and choose which he wants to. I also used my fated action reroll for that) He then manages to put out the fire. (17 for the save)

Crashing

The caster throws flames once more against the big kitty, catching his whiskers on fire yet again. (9 damage plus 5 ongoing fire damage (save ends)). The archer draws arrow and fires at the bard finding his mark again (8 damage).

Crashing

Zealot also catches his breath, regaining 22 HP and +2 to all defenses and (action point) once again swings his war pick at the mage (26 vs AC) dealing 16 damage and pulling him back five feet. He also calls down the wrath of Ioun upon the mage, marking him with an oath of enmity (if anyone attacks the mage, they can roll 2 d20’s and use either result).

Crashing

The warpick finds its mark, and the mage leaves a 5 foot long bloody trail behind him, he seems barely able to stand on his own 2 feet.

Crashing

Atoll growls about being on fire, AGAIN, and tries fruitlessly to put it out while still fighting the sergeant (failed Font of Life). He stands, focuses his ire (marks the sergeant), and strikes a blow (29 vs AC, 12 damage on a hit, slide 2, knock prone, and slowed).

Crashing

As he hits the ropes, the Sergeant falls to hands and knees and vomits blood and bile onto the floor. Wiping his mouth doesn’t so much wipe it clean as smear the fluids around. Shakily he gets to his feet, falls more than walks towards the shifter and bashes into him with his shield, missing and only hitting air.

Crashing

Jukka shoots the last archer, tired of being shot at himself. (27 v AC, 11 dam)

Crashing

The archer takes an arrow to the knee and decides to quit adventuring. The mage, seeing yet another fallen comrade, reaches into his cloak and pulls out a small vial and waves it in the direction of his enemies. The only one close enough to be affected is Zealot (who takes 14 poison damage and an ongoing 5 poison damage (save ends)).
